Ondo (ONDO) Tokenomie

Ondo Finance (ONDO) is a decentralized finance protocol focused on bringing institutional-grade financial products, such as tokenized U.S. Treasuries, onchain. The ONDO token serves as the primary governance mechanism for the Ondo DAO and Flux Finance.

Issuance Mechanism

The ONDO token was created on April 28, 2022, as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network. It has a maximum token supply of 10,000,000,000 (10 billion).

Key aspects of its issuance include:

• Inflation: There is no scheduled or planned inflation for the ONDO token.
• Minting: A "mint" function exists within the smart contract, which can only be called by an address assigned the "MINTER_ROLE." However, this function is hard-capped and cannot be executed if the total supply exceeds 10 billion tokens.
• Security: Transactions are secured by the Ethereum network's consensus mechanism.

Allocation Mechanism

The total supply of ONDO is distributed across several stakeholder groups, including ecosystem participants, investors, and core contributors.

The Ecosystem Growth allocation is intended for future distribution to contributors, including developers, educators, and strategic partners, potentially via airdrops. As of late 2024, these tokens were not held in the Ondo DAO treasury. The Protocol Development share is dedicated to core contributors building the infrastructure and products for the ecosystem.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The primary utility of the ONDO token is Governance. Tokenholders shape the future of the Ondo DAO and Flux Finance through the following mechanisms:

• Proposal Power: To submit an onchain proposal, a user must have at least 100 million ONDO delegated to them.
• Voting: Proposals relate to listing new assets (fTokens) on Flux Finance, updating interest rate models, managing treasury assets, and choosing administrators.
• Quorum Requirements: For a proposal to pass, at least 1 million ONDO must participate in the vote, and a majority must vote in favor.
• Ondo Points Program: Tokenholders can earn points by holding ONDO onchain. "Diamond hands" (those who do not sell tokens acquired in the Community Access Sale) receive bonus points. Points are also awarded for participating in governance through voting or delegation.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

Initially, all ONDO tokens were subject to a "Global Lock-Up" that prevented transfers. This lock-up was lifted on January 18, 2024, following a DAO governance vote (FIP-08), marking the token's public launch.

Vesting and Unlocking Schedule

While the global transfer restriction was lifted, specific tranches remain subject to structured vesting schedules:

• Private Investors (Seed & Series A): These tokens are subject to a one-year cliff starting from the public launch (January 18, 2024), followed by three years of yearly vesting.
• Core Team: Members of the Ondo core team are bound by a five-year lock-up period.
• Community Access Sale (CoinList):
  • Tranche 1: 1-year lock followed by an 18-month release.
  • Tranche 2: 1-year lock followed by a 6-month release.

Projected Unlock Timeline

The unlocking process is designed to be gradual, with significant portions of the supply becoming liquid annually through 2029 to minimize market supply shocks. As of late 2024, the top 10 wallet addresses collectively held approximately 83% of the maximum supply, indicating a high concentration of tokens in institutional or foundational custody.
