Pope Leo XIV directly challenged the Trump administration this week, stating he has "no fear" of the White House and will continue speaking "loudly" about God's message despite Trump's social media attacks against him.

The unprecedented confrontation marks a historic clash between the first American pope and a U.S. president who has repeatedly criticized him, but the Vatican is more likely to take criticism by Vice President JD Vance – a recent Catholic convert – more seriously, according to an analysis by CNN's Christopher Lamb.

This critic 'poses a direct threat' to JD Vance's 'extreme right-wing' philosophy: experts

“From the time Vance entered the Church, he has aligned himself with a cadre of extreme right-wing philosophers, theologians, and pundits who claim to be the authentic interpreters of Augustine’s City of God [a major work],” Dawn Eden Goldstein, a Catholic author and academic, told CNN.

Vance has already used St. Augustine's teachings to justify the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, and the 41-year-old vice president invoked the "Just War" theory to warn that Leo should exercise caution when making theological claims about the Iran war.

The reference to St. Augustine — spiritual founder of Leo's religious order — exposes the deep theological rift between the pope and the right-wing interpretation of church teachings to which Vance adheres, but Goldstein told CNN that the pontiff’s “undeniable expertise in Augustine’s thought … poses a direct threat to the efforts of the vice president and his post-liberal friends to present themselves to Catholics as authoritative interpreters of the Church’s social and political teachings.”

Speaking aboard the papal plane en route to Algeria for an African tour, Leo rejected what he characterized as abuse of the Gospel message. "Too many innocent lives have been lost," the Chicago-born pontiff said. "I believe someone must stand up and say there is a better way."

Leo's willingness to name Trump personally represents a dramatic departure from papal tradition, and his remarks that "God does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war" appeared to reference Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's efforts to frame the Iran conflict in religious terms. The pope also warned against those who "manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic or political gain."

The Vatican has announced Leo will not visit the United States in 2026, planning instead to spend July 4 on the Italian island of Lampedusa, a major immigration entry point — and a symbolic choice given the pope's criticism of the administration's immigration policies.

Vatican observers suggest the Church views this moment through a historical lens.

“The latest incident reminds me of Harold Macmillan [a former British prime minister] who said that among the three institutions no sensible person should attack is the Vatican,” said Gerard O’Connell, Vatican correspondent for the Catholic magazine America. “I imagine the Vatican will view this through the lens of history, knowing that empires come and go.”
