CM Punk Beats Finn Balor At WWE Elimination Chamber 2026| Key Points

  • CM Punk beat Finn Balor with a GTS to retain the WWE World Championship. Punk had a nostalgic, Chicago Bulls-inspired entrance in the United Center. This included licensed music from the Alan Parsons Project and legendary announcer Ray Clay.

CM Punk defeated Finn Balor in a heated semi-main event at WWE Elimination Chamber 2026. The term big-match-feel is bastardized in sports, but that’s exactly what this was in the United Center in Chicago. CM Punk’s entrance was a callback to the most famous sports team of all time in the 90s Bulls, with an entrance that included music from the Alan Parsons Project and legendary PA announcer Ray Clay.

Balor and Punk shook hands after the match. Punk celebrated alongside his wife, new WWE women’s Intercontinental champion AJ Lee.

CM Punk and Finn Balor were presented with the vaunted task of getting fans to believe that Finn Balor had a chance of dethroning CM Punk, thereby sacrificing arguably the biggest main event in all of wrestling: CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns. Any other feud would fall flat trying to convince hardcore wrestling fans that Balor had a chance, especially in an age of increasing overexposure for WWE. Netflix will premiere a third installment of Unreal this summer.

CM Punk remained a strong favorite headed into his world title match against Finn Balor, but both these pros did a fantastic job telling a story. CM Punk’s greatest quality, and the reason he’ll be a main eventer until he calls it quits, is his ability to tell a realistic story. Every feud featuring CM Punk feels real, and admittedly, some end up being just that.

Punk and Balor leaned into the elephant in the room that nobody thought Balor had a chance. By telling this story, Balor’s character continued a slow evolution into a valiant warrior who does not want shortcuts from the Judgment Day. Balor lost to Punk in his previous world title match against Punk on his island of Ireland. Now in enemy territory against CM Punk, the Finn Balor character wanted to test himself. Punk was clearly proud of his work with Finn as he lobbied for the match to notch one of the plush spots as the first or last match—the two most important spots on the show.

The partisan environment in Chicago overcame any potential interest issues in a match this seemingly predictable. Finn Balor is hitting his stride as a main character deep into WrestleMania season, and it greatly helped the heat of this match.

WWE is now 49 sleeps from WrestleMania 42, and one of its biggest main events of all time.
