Hindi Ito Marites: Canada and the Philippines are getting closer

The friendship between the Philippines and Canada is warming up like a Tim Hortons Double Double. Because politics in North America is murky right now, to say the least, Ottawa has been looking to the rest of the world for stronger partnerships. Manila is one bright spot.

An area in which broadening bilateral ties is evident is security cooperation. Naval visits and joint exercises with the Canadians are increasing, and that’s a welcome development. With the US becoming less predictable — i.e. reliable — in most every aspect of international relations including defense cooperation, the Philippines needs credible partners to keep fending off an ever-adventurous China.
